LeafFilter Gutter system failure | LeafFilter North

Some melting snow may flow over the Leaffilter gutter system, however, the bulk of the snow should enter into your clear and clean gutter and away from your home. If you suspect you are having issues with your LeafFilter system, feel free to reach out to our dedicated service and suppor team at our corporate offices. We'd be happy to send out a technician to assess your unique situation and provide any solutions we see fit. Thanks!

Reason of review
Damaged or defective

Just had this product installed 11/16/14. We had after a minor snow storm < 3 inches that covered the roof gutters and leaf filter screens.

Later that evening and over the last few days as the snow began to melt on the roof, the water was not flowing into the gutters but over the top of the gutter system. In my opinion if water is steadily dripping / pouring over the gutters then the system is failing to do what it supposed to do. Water is not going into the gutters as it melts.

Product fails to deliver as promised.

To summarize my position -

1) We purchased/installed the Leaf Filter system and drip edge in JUN 2010. Leaf Filter replaced one piece of fascia board and the gutter over the garage. The fascia board was rotted and the gutter was warped/rusted. No other issues existed with my fascia/ gutters - otherwise Leaf Filter would have replaced/fixed it then (in accordance with the warranty - detailed below). I am an Army officer, and frequently travel overseas for extended periods of time. I purchased the system/drip edge because I wanted to ensure that my home drainage system would not have any issues while I was gone.

2) Due to military requirements, I was absent from the Washington DC area from JUL 2013 until JUN 2014. When I returned, I noticed the the gutters were streaked, rusted, watermarked, and that the fascia was rotted in several locations. During a moderate thunderstorm last week, I took pictures/video of water flowing over the leaf filter system (instead of into it/the gutters), and dripping off the bottom of the gutter. I also identified a number of locations where water was flowing behind the drip edge/gutter, and dripping off the fascia.

Both an installation manager and the VA office manager acknowledged that parts of the leaf filter system were clogged with pollen and/or other micro pollutants, and that the entire system needed to be replaced. Further, they both acknowledged that installation of the system and drip edge could have been installed "better."

Bottom line - the leaf filter system failed. This failure caused permanent and irreparable damage to my gutters in the form of black streaks (my kids call them zebra gutters - I tried to power wash them, but the stains will not come off), rust stains and unsightly watermarks along the entire length of the gutters. Further, Leaf Filter either failed/or did a poor job of calking some of the seams in my existing gutters, with resulted in additional rust stains. Lastly, Leaf Filter did a poor job of installing portions of the drip edge, which caused water to run between the gutter and the fascia, resulting in stains, paint peeling and wood rot in multiple locations.

3) The written warranty provided to me by Leaf Filter states in part

- "We seal your gutter and downspouts with 50 year silicone"

- "We repair any damaged gutters and/or downspouts, if necessary"

- "We give you a manufacture's money back, no clog, guarantee."

Given the above commitment provided to me by Leaf Filter at the time of purchase, I feel strongly that Leaf Filter is responsible for the failure of the system/drip edge and resulting damage.

Update - it took me over ten business days to get in contact with Joe Roschival, LeafFilter Vice-President of Installation. Mr. Roschival was abusive, argumentative, and constantly interrupted me. He questioned my integrity and called me a liar three seperate occassions during our approximate 30 minute

Lead Filter product seems great. I am sure in some scenarios when the house is in a wide open area, it works great. But if the roof has debris in it because of trees in the yard, you will have problems. Here's how...

The stainless steel mesh is great, however the mircoscreen clogs. Imagine, their pitch is the mesh is so small not even a grain of sand gets through. I believe that as much as I believe the microscreen clogs. Once it does, the water runs off the gutter like there is not one present. It's like a waterfall.

Leaf Filter, after 2 years, came out and changed all the screens because "we have never really seen anything like this before." LOLOLOLOLOL... Sorry, I am trying to be professional about my discontent with Leaf Filter.

Bottom line is that you have to make sure your microscreen has to stay clean and that means YOU have to get on the roof and do it.

Lame.

The Leaf Filter system is 100% guaranteed not to let your gutters clog and this is where they get you. There is no explanation from the sales reps that the mesh may clog and have to be cleaned off.

There is no guarantee of the mesh not clogging and you will be told that the debris will just dry up and blow off. Well this is not the case at all and I have waterfalls over my gutters every time it rains and I'm constantly trying to clean the screen but as soon as the rain washes wet debris onto the mesh I have the same problem.

Overall there is no difference in having the gutters clog or the mesh clog so I feel I waited $1,800.00 and I'm not at all happy about it and I plan to spread the word as far as I can.

I had a LeafFilter Gutter System installed on my home in October of 2010 at a cost of $3962.00. They represented that the mesh screens of the system "is nearly 100% water permeable and has self cleaning properties; no organic debris or shingle grit can permanently adhere to it to cause it to clog." Since early spring of 2012, the LeafFilter gutter system mesh HAS clogged and water is flowing across the top of the mesh(despite constant cleaning)like Niagra Falls and onto my carport and landscaping causing damage.

I have tried to contact the contractor...no response.

I filed a BBB case against Leaf Filter LLC (who I sent my signed warranty contract to) and they basically stated to the BBB that they were not responsible and to stop bothering them with all the claims. Which leads me to believe that they have had MANY complaints.

I believe your story. In fact I've seen many photos of the mesh screen clogging from algae.

However Leaffilter themselves always likes to point out that these reviews are left anonymously and are therefore bogus reviews left by competitors. If you want to do researchers a favor, then alway leave your name to make the review more credible!

Leaf Filter not telling the whole truth about the reviews they got from consumer reports.org read it for your self and decide is this what you want on your home,consumerreports.org

This is what the consumer report stated about leaf filter

Pros disappoint in a downpour

Most of the professionally installed systems use a surface-tension design, where water is supposed to cling to the surface and flow into the gutters while leaves pass over and fall to the ground. Though all were impressive at shedding debris, even the top-scoring Leaf Filter screen was only middling at containing a severe downpour.

Leaf filter installs flat and allows everything to just sit on it. Try Gutterglove or Mastershield.

They install at the same pitch as your roof.

As a matter of fact in the Consumer Reports test , Gutterglove was the best performance product test. Facts

Once again, to have a company rep put this kind of remark online has convinced me to stay clear of this company completely. Charming.

Einstein. If you read the bottom of the article it states Leaf Filter handles 2.5 to 3.5 inches of water per hour.

Leaf Filter does not use surface tension.

This is why these sites need a Dummy Filter for posters like you.

It might be true that gutters will not clog but what about the micro-screens? Dirt, pollen and whatever small particles clog the screens and now instead of just cleaning out your gutters you have to scrape the *** off the top and then soak the screens/scrub with a brush and then wash off.

So now a job that maybe might have taken 2 hrs to do takes days.

Also watch on how they are installed. Mine have been up 4 yrs now and rain water has back up ,due to flashing that was installed improperly, under the shingles and now my roof is leaking .

We had these gutters installed three years ago and now we might as well not have gutters. Dirt, oil and whatever else have made the micro screen waterproof and water runs over the gutter, not into the gutter.

The worst spot in the whole gutter system is right over our front porch so we walk through a waterfall. Detergent and a scrub brush don't seem to work. Thinking of poking lots of small holes through the micro screen.

Wish I could sue! :(
